I'm delighted to tell everyone that my new fantasy trilogy, The Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution, will be published by Solaris, beginning with simultaneous UK and US publication of the first volume, Straws in the Wind, in the summer of 2008.
This is a story of political upheaval born of civil war. The wretched country of Lescar has already featured as backdrop to The Tales of Einarinn, so readers there will know that six rival dukes are all claiming the crown of High King and consequently the ordinary folk suffer as battles are waged back and forth, never coming to a decisive conclusion. Some of those ordinary folk have been doing what they can to fight back, as readers of my novella Turns and Chances will know.
Now a mismatched group of exiles and rebels are decided that the time has come for change. What can they do to resolve a situation that's prompted generations of intractable misery? Well, only a few stones falling in the right place can set a landslide in motion. On the other hand, once a landslide has begun, no one can tell what the consequences will be once the dust has finally settled.
I'm really excited about this, both about the story I have ready to tell, and about working with Solaris which has so rapidly proved to be an interesting and innovative imprint.
So that's what lies behind the hints and evasions of the last few posts.
Though now I have to decide how I'm going to approach the blogging-while-writing and writing-while-blogging questions. Because as with so much about this writing life, every author I know seems to do this a bit differently.
Hmmmm. Yes, I have weekly word and progress targets already planned out for myself. Do I want to share these and offer up regular updates? Erm, no, not really. Not in any specific detail. Sorry. Do I want to share out draft material and invite comment. Not on a bet. I just don't work like that.
So I think it'll be general updates and progress reports only.
Hopefully progress will be all the more rapid thanks to the new computer set-up hereabouts. After a weekend of endless sorting I am now using my laptop plus additional monitor as my main machine. So I am now having two screens to work with at once - and this has already proved its worth as I've been doing updates to my website today.
Also, my desktop as was is now in senior son's room, on the understanding that both of them can now use it to play their daft games in there rather than pestering me for use of the study. Oh and y’know, doing homework and stuff. This is all A Good Thing.
But naturally, it came with the endless hassle of frigging about with cables and connections and swapping data and updating software that seems inescapable when computers are involved. And y’know, digging into cupboards for discs that you know you’ve got somewhere but you’re blowed if you can remember quite where…
All done now, thankfully. And the lads go back to school next week, so I'll be back into the writing routine - hurrah!
