This one is going to go right to the wire
A productive week here, lingering remnants of the vile cold notwithstanding. The central section of The Book in Hand has been tightened up and expanded where necessary. I've had some very useful feedback from test readers and at close of play these week, I reckon the project is overall in pretty nifty shape thus far.
Which is good, because doing a few calculations, assuming the current average word rate, I am going to have a draft for sending to the Solaris team at close of play on Friday 14th December. It's due on Monday 17th December. So that'll be Friday evening feeding paper into the printer and then I'd better make the post office with the big fat package of text before it shuts on the Saturday lunchtime. And pay for guaranteed quick delivery.
Then I might be able to think about Xmas. It's December tomorrow and normally around now, I'd be thinking, I really must make the cake, and decide if I'm doing puddings, and all that kindathing. Nope, not a flicker. Have got as far as insisting the sons come up with gift wishlists since friends and relatives have started asking but that's it.
The extent this book is dominating my thoughts became apparent when I realised I'd backed up the working files to three different datakey/pendrives and two external hard drives. Data security or paranoia?
At least I now have two working external hard drives. One of them went all dark and silent on me a while back. Since this is the one that had a power lead fail before, I borrowed the same spare power lead today and tried that. Yup, it worked. We isolated the problem down as far as the bit of lead going from the socket to the transformer. Unplugging it, husband looked thoughtfully at the plug and 'Do we have any fuses?' Yup, that was the problem, the 3 amp fuse in the plug. I cannot recall when I last changed a fuse in anything!
