This is a question The New Scientist are debating, as part of their SF special edition.
Marcus Chown is finding more to say about that than 'duh, no, next?' Though what he has to say probably won't come as much of a surprise to anyone regularly attending SF conventions, it's good to see it out there for the non-con-goers/potential fans who can be drawn back in.
Then there are the links at the bottom of his post to a whole lot more goodness plus reviews
I'm off to have a read of it all!
