I made a solid start on the rewrites/revising of Blood in the Water last week - and need to crack on this morning, since this afternoon sees me heading into London for the Society of Author's AGM.

Senior son and I had a very enjoyable day at Gamesfest III on Saturday. He bought a Halo 3 las-something (big gun) and got to talk to his Warhammer 40k writerly heroes, Dan Abnett, James Swallow and Gav Thorpe. As did I, and very interesting that was too, on all sorts of levels. Other writers present included the talented and charming Stephen Hunt - his second novel The Kingdom beyond the Waves is right up there on my TBR list - once Blood is safely delivered. Also, Stan Nicholls and Mark Chadbourn, my friends and colleagues in The Write Fantastic, and pals such as James Barclay, Raven Dane and Derek Gunn. Good to catch up with them all. And there were Star Wars stormtroopers in full armour - most impressive.

And er, we writers did have plenty of time to chat. As I have observed before at gaming-type conventions, sometimes the 'we'll get a bunch of writers/artists to sit at tables and folk will come and chat to them' approach works fine. More often, having some kind of programme, even a very light one, does give the gamers rather more incentive to come and see what the writerly types they've not actually heard of might be like in person. Hey ho, I had a good day regardless.

Younger son was camping with the scouts. Did you see the forecast/weather for this part of the world? We really did half expect a 'come and get them early' phone call - not too disastrous a prospect give they were only the other side of Oxford. It didn't come - and when we collected him, he was reasonably cheerful, if hungry, cold and damp. It seems two of the other lads blotted their copybooks comprehensively - for reasons that had nothing to do with the weather, so that was also a bit of a downer. Ho hum, all character building stuff.

And I've told him to make me some notes on the trying to sleep under canvas in torrential rain, cold, damp, hungry etc. I have a character who finds himself in that exact position towards the end of Blood, so junior son's experiences will come in very handy. It's some years since I've been in that position myself. That seems to have boosted morale.

As is the prospect of Newcon in Northampton next weekend. Junior son is coming along with me and we both confidently expect to have a fabulous time!

On which basis I had better get a solid week's work in first...
