Okay, some preparation remains to be done over the weekend for the plastering to begin on Monday. It's achievable over the weekend. Bulky refuse collection for the binned bed, wardrobe, carpet etc is all organised.

Small black cat is enjoying uncarpeted stairs as they offer a choice of new places to strop her razor-like claws. It's remarkably how noisy that can be at 6 am.

I am tied to the house today until Tesco Direct deliver several hundred quids worth of paint. This still seems utterly bizarre but they're the cheapest for what we want by some margin - and as you know Bob, margins are important in this game. Other supplies are in hand.

I have met both outstanding non-my-fiction writing deadlines. Phew. Work admin is as up to date as it can be until some paperwork arrives next month and that will require minimal sorting.

The Write Fantastic's autumn programme is satisfactorily busy and the details are pretty much nailed down. I can post an update later in August when the final dots and crossings are done.

Domestic admin has two significant outstanding tasks but those cannot be tackled till later today when husband gets home from work. When they will be.

Apropos the writing, I am not where I wanted to be by now with the second Lescari book. But the shortfall is explicable on account of the whole house upheaval so I need not feel guilty. Apprehensive about catching up? Not really. The schedule has slack built into it and the sons are booked in for a week at my mum's in mid-August so I can write solidly then. Even if it means sitting in the garden with the laptop. Or a local coffee shop.

Senior son enjoyed his school trip to Ypres. We had detailed accounts of the coach, the ferry, the games arcade on the ferry, the hotel, the dinners, the breakfasts. Asking about the educational content, he shrugged and said, 'we saw trenches and a lot of graves. It was all a bit depressing really.' Happily more stuff about the Flanders Field museum, the Menin Gate etc has been forthcoming over the past few days, so it would seem to have been a more worthwhile learning experience than first appeared.

Junior Son also won a school prize this year - for Progress. Congratulations and modest financial reward have been duly forthcoming. We find payment for results works as an incentive hereabouts.

That's about it, really. Right, I shall spend the rest of the morning doing what I can to make sure the book slippage doesn't get any worse and then it's hey ho for the school summer holidays and extreme-house-makeovering! Expect me when you see me.

Here's something to look out for. Phil Rickman will be talking fantasy fiction on his BBC Radio Wales programme this coming Sunday afternoon, 20th July, at 5.30 pm. There's a repeat at 9.30 pm on the Monday.

For those of us outside Wales, BBC iPlayer is the answer.

(I might have been on this myself but the timings couldn't be worked out. A shame - but given the current mad schedule here... Another time, hopefully!)
