Delighted to say that all went as planned and husband Steve came home on Saturday afternoon, having had, according to the paperwork, an arthroscopy on his left knee.

He was, and is, remarkably chipper. Well, the odds were good he wouldn't suffer much by way of after-effects from the anaesthetic. He's officially, remarkably resistant to such things. It's in his medical notes. When he had his wisdom teeth out he startled everyone else involved by waking up before they had wheeled him out of the operating theatre. And he goes from fully off to fully on. So on Saturday when other folk would be slowly coming round and doing the 'where am I? who am I?' routine, he was sitting up and and asking hopefully for a cup of tea and when could he go home, please?

After you've seen the physio was the reply. So he did that as soon as could be arranged and has his exercises to do. Which he is doing.

The surgeon's prognostications for how he'd feel afterwards were far less dire than everything I was told on the phone. Not unknown in medical scenarios. Mr Surgeon reckons he needs a week off work but after that he can go back if he wants given he's office based. As long as he can get a lift so he doesn't need to drive. That's certainly doable, so we shall see.

Thus far he's had no pain but the knee feels 'tired and weak' if that makes any sense. So he is moving cautiously but overall easily enough. He did sleep for 12 hours straight from Saturday night to late Sunday morning which may be the anaesthetic - or may just be his subconscious realising that there's at least a week off in view so hey, let's catch up on some sleep!

We unwrapped it late last night and it looks remarkably unbruised or swollen. Changed the dressings and that's all fine. Now we wait till the 'keep it dry for ten days' deadline passes and he can have a proper bath/shower. When we'll find out if the magic marker that the surgeon used to draw a big black arrow and (L) on his shin is permanent or water-soluble!
