Mitch Benn is the extremely talented musician who writes and sings the songs for The Now Show, BBC4's weekly topical comedy show broadcast at 6.30 UK time, Friday and repeated 12.30 lunchtime on Saturday. His contributions are always a high point for me, and this week he excelled.
News that an RAF Nimrod crew managed to fix some key bit of their plane with a teapot prompted a song reminiscent of every old black and white WW2 film you've ever seen.
Later in the show he picked up on a trailer for a series of ecological programmes on Radio 4 that had included this gem; 'on the precipice of a runaway train'. I remember catching this in the week and being totally derailed from the usual business of getting the sons up and breakfasted by thinking WTF?
Anyway, advising whoever this was to get their metaphors sorted, Mitch Benn launched into a song reminiscent of ooh, pale imitators of Jim Steinman, mangling every disaster cliche in the book, along the lines of 'we've got a snowball's chance in a handcart.'
It's brilliant and well worth seeking out via the BBC website, Radio 4 listen again service.
Oh and Mitch Benn has done his own series; Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music. If that comes round again, it's a very good listen.
